36 Star Flag, Parade Civil War 1864
36-STAR AMERICAN PARADE FLAG
CIVIL WAR ca.
Nevada Statehood 1864-1867
Flag size: (HxL) 11 ½” x 17 ½” (18 ¼” bottom)
Frame size: (HXL) 20 ½” x 24 ½”
Thirty-Six Star American National Parade flag made of glazed cotton. This beautiful flag has remarkable rare color hues, likely due to a naturally aged chemical oxidation in the dyes which led to breaking down the original red colored stripes to a coral-pink shade and aged the white stars and stripes to light golden-brown tones. During the dying process the fabric had a slight fold in the canton, creating 3 misprinted stars and an undyed area appearing as a beam of light or shooting star.
On October 31, 1864, Nevada was the 36th State to join the Union and became official on July 4, 1865, nearing the end of the Civil War. Although the 36 Star did not become official until 1865, flag makers would have begun making them in 1864 in anticipation of the new state. The 36-Star flag was the official star count until 1867 with the addition of Nebraska.
Condition:
Small areas of material loss mainly in the center in each of the top 5 white stripes, and two pin size holes in the middle and bottom of the hoist where the wooden staff had once been attached. The first star on the canton has significant fabric loss and it appears that at some point the canton had been cut along the hoist line.
Mounting process: pressure mounted; the flag is placed on top of pre-washed cotton fabric, covering cotton batting, on an acid free mounting board.
